Trainee Positions

  • Please note that some positions for ACEM, PEM, and RACP have been recruited directly to the site for 2025.  The positions available in VPAT are able to be accredited for PEM training.

 

Trainee Levels

  • Required experience:
    • Fulfilled requirements for joining Advanced Training in PEM by commencement
    • APLS course completion or undertake to complete this trianing prior to commencement of employment
  • Registration with AHPRA
  • All applications will be required to undergo a Police Check and Working with Children Check

Role

  • Notable features of the department and position include:
    • RCH is the major paediatric Trauma Centre for Victoria
    • RCH provides teriary and quaternary care for some of the most critically ill and complex patients in Victoria

Rosters and on-call

  • Registrars are on a rotating roster providing 24 hour per day, 7 days per week cover in the Emergency Department

 

Senior Staff

  • 34 paediatric emergency specialists on staff
  • PEM specialist cover 7 days per week onsite 0730 - 2400 and on-call

 

Education and Teaching

  • Weekly teaching program
    • Weekly paid teaching time per week
    • Structured teaching program with site and virtual sessions, with streams to match trainees experience and requirements
    • Shared education with RCH/Monash/Northern/Austin PEM teams
    • Daily in-site simulation including airway drills
    • The department has an active education program and plays a major role in national and international emergency medicine research

  • The Royal Children's Hospital is located close to the Melbourne CBD, in the Parkville Healthcare Precinct

  • The hospital has a tram stop on Flemington Rd and is serviced by buses to North Melbourne train station (1.4km)

    The Royal Children's Hospital Emergency Department manages approximately 90,000 annual presentations by children under 18 years of age.  The successful applicants will assess and manage paediatric emergency patients and supervise more junior members of the medical team within the Emergency Department and The Emergency Department Short Stay Uni.  The PEM registrar roster includes daytime, evening, weekend and night shifts.

    The Royal Children's Emergency Department is an accredited training site with RACP and ACEM for Paediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM).  These registrar positions are particularly suitable for first year Advanced Trainees in paediatric emergency medicine.
