Training at one of our rural sites offers rich learning experiences for doctors at all levels of training. We encourage you to contact the sites to learn more about what they can offer.
What are some of the advantages to Rural Training?
- Smaller teams where you really get to know and develop close working relationships with nursing, allied health, and medical staff
- Ability to follow a patient through their medical journey - from ED presentation, to inpatients, and then through to clinic / community follow-up
- A real generalist approach to medical care where you will do a little bit of everything - no admissions under sub-specialists for conditions like diabetes, cystic fibrosis, or seizures. And no need to make referrals for things that are readily managed by a General Paediatrician (but with easy phone-call access if you do need that advice)
- Ability to attend a range of specialist clinics when visiting specialists attend the region, but then ongoing care for children in your general clinics and inpatient service
- Be involved in a wide range of acute care in ED and maternity services - with great support from the local Paediatricians who are usually only a few minutes away from the hospital
- Become immersed in community opportunities - know your local barista; join sports clubs or the local book club; visit local sites; explore nature
- No traffic jams or long commutes!
- No stress about getting your core community rotation, as most sites provide core General Paediatrics with perinatal (whilst concurrently also getting the rural component completed), and if you stay for 12 months you will also get core Developmental/Psychosocial training completed (please see individual sites to make sure this is available at your desired location).
- Most sites are able to do Top-Up training or Peer Review posts for those overseas-trained doctors who have College requirements to complete. Please contact sites to ensure they can offer this prior to making your preferences on your application.
